DESCRIPTION:The ANSI/BIFMA standard behind the LEVEL sustainability certification program has undergone a major revision in 2024. Steve Kooy\, BIFMA’s Health & Sustainability Director\, and Allison Pekalski\, Steelcase’s Senior Sustainability Consultant will walk through what’s new\, what’s changed\, and comparisons to the prior 2019 version. Steve has more than 15 years of experience as a sustainability professional in the furniture industry. \nPrior to joining BIFMA\, Steve worked in sales and business development for Intertek – a third-party auditor\, certifier\, and test lab. In this role\, he worked with global furniture clients to properly test and certify products to electrical\, mechanical\, and environmental standards. \nSteve served as Haworth’s Global Sustainability/Open Innovation Manager for many years as the built environment’s interest in green building flourished. Highlights at Haworth included: creating and driving well-being initiatives\, setting sustainable design criteria for cleaner chemistry and responsible supply chains\, and pursuing product certifications. WELL and LEED experience includes managing or co-managing LEED certification projects in Asia\, Europe\, and North America as well as piloting the WELL certification in Shanghai and Los Angeles. \nAllison Pekalski\, Steelcase’s Senior Sustainability Consultant\nAs a Senior Sustainability Consultant for Steelcase\, Allison Pekalski manages the company’s LEVEL certification program\, encompassing nearly 300 product lines. Allison also serves as a Vice Chair of BIFMA’s e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard Subcommittee to ensure the standard behind the LEVEL certification program continues to move the furniture market towards increasingly sustainable practices. \nPrior to joining Steelcase\, Allison led the sustainable product certification and environmental product declaration (EPD) verification programs at NSF International. Allison also has experience at the civic and community level as the Environmental Commissioner for the City of Ann Arbor\, MI and in various roles with the Clean Energy Coalition.
